Did you read my last post on the 1980 Bual from Blandy’s? Are you a fan of Bual, also spelled Boal from time to time? Then you might want to check out the 2000 Single Harvest Boal from Mr. Humberto Jardim and his colleagues at Henriques and Henriques! Not that the Single Harvest has much in common with the 1980 Vintage version, but for the fact that it is a really tasty and seductive style of Bual, despite its youth.

I like Henriques and Henriques a lot. Not only the always so friendly and welcoming Humberto but the blends are very good as well, especially the 15 years old versions which are amazing wines. It is important keeping this in mind that, although I mostly write about Vintage and Colheita Madeira, it is the 3, 5 and 10 years old blends that a majority of the consumers pick up. When these are at a high quality level you know what to expect when deciding for a premium bottle of the company. This is exactly the case with Henriques times two.

It is also fun keeping an eye on what will emerge from the portfolio of Humberto Jardim because new and cool stuff do pop up here, from time to time. Or how about a 20 years old Terrantez, a Single Harvest Tinta Negra or a 20 years old Malvasia? And sometimes they just decide to launch an century old wine, like the truly fantastic 1898 Verdelho!

The 2000 Single Harvest Boal shows some complexity but mostly it is a straightforward wine impossible not to love! The nose is filled with burnt sugar, vanilla, ground coffee, walnuts, dust and well, how shall I put it, powder sugar? Some dried apricots as well.

The palate is quite sweet with a perhaps not high but balancing acidity. Vanilla fudge, coffee, smoke, wet rocks and candied peaches. Quite intense with a long, lingering finish. A pure joy to drink!

Want to taste the Boal? Sadly I have no clue where to buy this seducer, so try contacting the producer directly for retailers.
