Okay, here we go. Focus.

1880 Terrantez in the glass. The same year as the building of the Panama Canal began. The same year as the first pay telephone was installed. The same year as James Garfield were elected president in the U.S. The same year as the First Boer war started. The same year as Sarah Bernhardt made her U.S. debut at New York’s Booth Theater. Amazing. What an honor to drink this. Wonder how life was back then? Where on the island did the grapes grow? Who picked them? Could the winemaker ever believe that 131 years later someone would sit in the lodge of Pereira d’Oliveira, drinking his wine?

No, no, no, focus.

It is easy to get carried away and only focus on what the stenciled bottle says. 1880. Still, what matters are the inside, the content of the bottle. And we all know what age can do to Madeira and what a divine drink it can turn in to. And yes, sometimes it takes 131 years before reaching perfect maturity….

Luís d’Oliveira don’t have anything left on cask of the 1880 Terrantez. Everything is bottled. Time to taste history:

Not as dark as I might have guessed. A bit cloudy. What great complexity; earth, bitter almond oil, dried flowers, Maple syrup, roasted coffee and Oolong tea. Some tobacco and fudge as well. Ethereal. On the palate it shows great balance with gentle notes of oriental spices, clove, roasted coffee, cocoa, hazelnuts, smoke and orange peel. Quite a mouth-fill. The acidity is of the more gentle kind (when speaking of Madeira that is). Long, lasting and earthy finish.

1880 Terrantez. The same year as Tsar Alexander II of Russia survived an assassination attempt. The same year as the first town were completely illuminated by electric lighting (Wabash, Indiana). The same year as Theodore ”Teddy” Roosevelt turned 22 years old.

NB. When it comes to the bottling year, Luís couldn’t give a direct answer without checking the old journals, but thought it was bottled during the 1980′s. Anyone reading this who knows more exactly?

Want to buy it? The Rare Wine Co sells it, if you’re in the U.S. In Europe, check with Bovey Wines in UK (importer) and The Madeira Collection.

Always a pleasure to read about your Madeira adventures. I have a question not related to this particular post: My mothers going to Madeira in a few weeks, and she has agreed to carry two bottles with her for me on her way back. It has to be from the airport, in other words from the Blandys wine shop. I was thinking of the 1968 Bual from Blandy’s. Or have you any other suggestions?

  • Niklas Jorgensen

Hi Werner, glad to have you here. As always; how much do you want to pay ;-) The guys at Blandy’s can send bottles to their shop in the airport, if it is something special you want. The 1968 is a great glass yes, perhaps not d’oliveiras great (their 1968 Bual is a reference) but you won’t be disappointed. If not vintage, then remember that they have just released a fine, fine 20 YO Terrantez as well. Would love to hear your opinion on that one.

Otherwise, best buy there is the 1976 Terrantez. Really a fab glass!

Thanks, I read your review of the 1976 Terrantez and it does seem appealing! One of each perhaps:) How much do I want to pay? I wish I could say that it really doesn’t matter, but I’m afraid it wouldn’t be true!

Can’t remember the price at the lodge but maybe around EUR 120? If elegance is your thing, this is is!

The 20 YO Terrantez is around EUR 30 and I think it comes in 50 cl bottles. Fine buy as well.

PS. Which Madeira are you popping for Christmas?

  • Werner

Madeira for christmas… We are in the middle of moving, so I’m not sure I’ll be able to access my cellared wines. The holidays wil be spent at my parents in law’s house, and I know they picked up some fine wines the last time they were on the island, so I am confident that it will work out. Anyway, I have available a Ramos Pinto 30 YO tawny, so we’ll be fine:)

    • Niklas Jorgensen

Well, same here. Renovating and either moving the days before xmas or just after. Luckily only a short move but fixing the new apt is basically what my life is all about now!

Still, Malvasia it is for christmas and i have the 1980 from the Olim brothers ready and awaiting us!
