First nothing and then two books with short interval. Ok, one of them I have to blaim myself for having missed until now, but for long have I wished for new exciting literature handling Madeira since Liddell’s Madeira. In other words, thanks to David Hancock and Trevor Elliot Christmas came early this year!

Currently I’m all absorbed in the fascinating Oceans of wine by Professor David Hancock. Readers on the search after a classic wine book will perhaps be disappointed since Hancock, a professor in history at the University of Michigan, mainly focuses on how the Madeira wine influenced and shaped the emerging American society and trade.

Halfway through I’m impressed by the work Hancock has put into this piece. Oceans of wine delivers perspectives on wine that easily gets lost in a majority of the wine literature and in our modern and stressed society just on the search for the best wine purchase. Find yourself a copy of this one and you’ll understand how much more there is to wine.

For an extended review, check out The Page 99 Test.

Get your copy? David Hancock’s Oceans of wine: Madeira and the Emergence of American Trade and Taste can be purchased here.

Can’t wait to check out Trevor Elliot’s work as well now!

What’s do you think about it? Have you already read it?

Yup, read it. Very academic and filled with interesting history. If one expects to find a lot on Madeira wine then there might be some disappointment. But from an economic perspective and cultural (how the wine affected the US) it is a great read. Fascinating read. Then again, I have some economic history in my degree…
